What the verification means, how to check a particular product and why a claim should never be assumed for an entire brand.

Look for product-specific verification

Non-GMO Project Verified is a third-party verification program with a published standard. A product's verification should be checked through its current packaging and the Non-GMO Project's product directory, rather than inferred from the company name.

Flavors, package formats and formulations can differ. Search for the exact brand and product you are considering, and confirm that the listing matches the item you are buying.

What it does—and does not—tell you

Non-GMO verification addresses the program's requirements concerning genetically modified organisms. It is not a substitute for reading nutrition facts, allergen information or a product's ingredient list.

It does not by itself establish that a drink is organic, vegan, lower in sugar or suitable for a particular dietary need. Those are separate attributes requiring separate evidence.

A practical checklist for boba shoppers

Start with the exact flavor and size. Review the package, check the official directory and ask the manufacturer if the information does not match.
